Founded in 1919. Some 800,000 items on Russian military history from the 18th century onwards: 24 halls and an open-air park of military hardware.
The building. Built in 1965 to a design by N. Gaigarov and B. Barkhin.
Good to know. Free on the second Wednesday of the month for under-18s, students and large families. Prams are not allowed in the halls.
What to see
The original Victory Banner raised over the Reichstag; wreckage of the Lockheed U-2 of Francis Gary Powers, shot down near Sverdlovsk on 1 May 1960; over 150 machines outdoors.
Minimum route — 2–3 hours for the essentials
The Victory Hall with the Victory Banner, then the U-2 wreckage. Keep half your time for the outdoor park.

Box office closes half an hour early. Closed Monday and Tuesday. From 1 April to 30 September the outdoor hardware park stays open until 18:45.

When to go
The outdoor park needs dry weather. In winter it shuts at 17:45, so come before 15:00.
