9+With childrenThe memorial rooms need a reader of Dead Souls. No point before nine.wheelchairStep-free accessThe museum — no. A 17th-century house entered by steps, with no platform lift.
Getting there — partly. Arbatskaya has no lift. Moscow metro stations almost never have lifts to the platform, except on the Big Circle line and the MCC. A wheelchair user is better served by the surface buses, which are low-floor across the centre.1 hour
The only memorial museum of Gogol in Russia. He moved here in 1848 at Count Tolstoy’s invitation, lived his last four years here and died on 21 February 1852.
The building. 17th-century chambers, badly damaged in the fire of 1812; the façade has barely changed since the repair.
Good to know. A research library, reading room and music department work here. The last working day of the month is a cleaning day.
