Unusual : Moscow museums open on Tuesday

Not every museum in the city, but those that can open new worlds, point to genuine masterpieces, sharpen the mind and move the soul. Every entry carries our own rating of the collection, what matters most here, a minimum route to the essentials, when to come to avoid the crowds and what it costs. Every entry is dated with its last check.

Victor Borisov-Musatov. The Harmony of the Image

Over 140 works from twenty collections: The Pool, The Emerald Necklace and studies almost never shown. Russian Symbolism is one of the summits at which art lifts a person beyond himself; a retrospective this full comes once in a generation.

16 July — 11 October 2026

Work by the sculptor who carved quebracho and algarrobo: in his hands wood holds shapes impossible in marble.

4 August — 1 November 2026

Over seven hundred objects: sculpture and painting of Russian Buddhism, almost none of it shown before. More than a hundred sculptures were conserved for the opening.

27 March — 1 November 2026

More than 150 sheets that almost never leave the store: pastel sheds under light and movement and is rarely shown. Halls 49–54.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Machines
Museum of Soviet Arcade Machines, CC BY-SA 4.0 · Wikimedia Commons
The only museum where the exhibit works: the machine starts on a coin, and that changes the whole way of meeting the object. As a monument of late Soviet daily life it is precise and honest.

Sea Battle, Gorodki, Sniper, Safari — the machines work rather than stand behind glass; and the soda machine with a faceted glass.

Rozhdestvenka 12 · today 11:00–21:00 · from 650 ₽ 1.5 hours7+ The machines start on a coin and actually work — from seven that beats any display case.wheelchair — partly The museum — partly. The hall is in a basement reached by stairs; there is no platform lift. Telephone ahead and staff will help.
Getting there — partly. Kuznetsky Most and Lubyanka have no lifts. Moscow metro stations almost never have lifts to the platform, except on the Big Circle line and the MCC. A wheelchair user is better served by the surface buses, which are low-floor across the centre.

Museum of Bookplates and Miniature Books
The only collection of bookplates in Russia — a field between graphic art and bibliophilia shown systematically nowhere else. The circle of admirers is narrow, the subject genuine.

Bookplates by Russian and foreign artists, miniature editions and micro-books, writing on a grain of rice and miniatures on ivory.

Museum of the History of Chocolate and Cocoa
An industrial tour rather than a museum: the value is the walk into the working shop and the history of Einem. As a collection it is next to nothing, and we do not hide that.

A walk into the working shop where sweets are wrapped in front of you; the history of Einem and Krasny Oktyabr in original wrappers and advertising.

Malaya Krasnoselskaya 7 (entrance from Lobachika 1, bldg 1) · closed today · from 1,800 ₽ 2 hours8+ The age limit is the museum’s own: from 8, this is a working factory.wheelchair — no The museum — no. Production areas with thresholds and stairs.

How we keep this list

Checked on 15 August 2026 — against museum websites and open sources. Every entry carries its own date of checking and what it was checked against. A price we could not confirm we say so, rather than leaving the old one.

Time needed is for the essentials, along our minimum route, without the café, the shop or the cloakroom queue. Going through the whole museum almost always takes longer.

The photographs come from Wikimedia Commons under free licences; the author and the licence are given under each one.

18 May is International Museum Day (since 1977), and the night of 17–18 May is Museum Night. On those days museums keep different hours and are often free.
